Year 12 Chemistry Workshop at La Trobe University

The Year 12 Chemistry students visited La Trobe University’s Institute for Molecular Sciences this term, as part of the Unit 4 Chemistry course. The students had the opportunity to experience using some cool machinery - including the Mass Spectrometer and the Carbon Nuclear Magnetic Resonance device - and to see the real-life applications of the powerful equipment.

Mentored by the academics of La Trobe University, students were shown a rare perspective into the work that is conducted by researchers at the university. Students were further mentored on how to interpret the data that was attained from the devices, and will complement their own studies in the classroom.

Overall the excursion was found to be incredibly rewarding for all attendees. Meadow Fair Chemistry students would like to extend their deepest thanks to The La Trobe Outreach Program, the La Trobe Institute for Molecular Sciences, the Sirius College Chemistry Department, and to Mr. Addo, for providing this fulfilling, hands-on learning experience.
